Ballaghbeama Cycle Loop
Photo Gallery ///
This tour takes you out into one of the remotest parts of Kerry before returning over the wonderful Gap of Dunloe.
You ride west from Killarney and head into the centre of the peninsula, where few tourists go. Much of the first half of this ride is spent with fantastic views of the MacGillycuddy Reeks – the highest mountains in Ireland.
You climb past Lough Acoose and go through Glencar before beginning the gentle rise up the spectacular Ballaghbeama Gap. After descending the other side you ride past Lough Brin and over a hill to the foot of the Gap of Dunloe. You have an optional trip into the Black Valley before the final dramatic road through the gap and return to Killarney.
There are ogham stones near the turnoff for the Gap of Dunloe.
Ballaghbeama Gap is a low but beautiful pass in the centre of the peninsula.
The Black Valley – a 10km detour into a valley so remote it wasn’t connected to the electrical grid until 1976.
The Gap of Dunloe – a popular, quiet pass along a narrow road through a glaciated valley.
