Ballina to Sligo Cycle Directions
0 to 10km
From the southern of the two bridges in Ballina follow the R294 going east, signed Tobercurry. Keep straight on Abbey Street and stay on the R294 as it leaves Ballina [5km marker].
After 6km you start climbing steadily.
10 – 20km
Keep straight all the way and at the top you cross into Sligo and pass [15km marker] between two mountains. Soon after you approach Lough Tait. Just before you reach it, take the narrow left turn, signed Mass Rock.
When you reach a t-junction, turn right. You are heading into one of the remotest parts of the country and the road can be rough. You descend a hill.
20 – 30km
Several kilometres later you reach another t-junction, shortly after passing Mass Rock on your left. It is only a short walk up to the rock. Turn left this time. It is [25km marker] 5.4km and a short climb to Easky Lough.
Continue straight past the beautiful lake.
30 – 40km
Take the first right turn, 6.3km later [35km marker]. When you reach a t-junction after another 2.7km, turn left. Take the first right turn soon after this, up a short rise.
On a clear day you can see the distinctive shape of Benbulben far in the distance. When this road bends sharply left you ignore a right turn. Go down the hill.
40 – 50km
Take the first right turn again, which is very narrow and easy to miss. After a few corners you climb a hill. Then you go through several sharp corners and turn right at a t-junction.
This road goes up and down before [45km marker] you take the first right turn.
This road climbs steadily uphill. After going over the top take the second left turn, opposite a forest track.
50 – 60km
Go up and over this hill (it has great views) and down the other side [55km marker]. Keep straight on this road all the way to a t-junction with a two-lane road. Turn left.
After a few hundred metres take the first right turn, signed Collooney.
60 – 70km
Take the second left down a narrow road which goes almost in the same direction as the main road.
Ignore a right turn and keep going uphill, and then down the other side.
Turn right at the t-junction with the N59 [65km marker] and ride to Ballysadare.
Go through the village on the N59, going left at the first roundabout and over the river. Go left again at the next roundabout and then the road curves right and leaves the village.
Soon you pass under a railway bridge. You can see the N4 passing overhead in front of you. Take the left turn uphill between the two bridges.
Then take the first left to go back under the railway, signed Strandhill. You are on the R292.
70 – 77km
Take the first right. Stay on this road for 3.0km as it twists and turns.
When you reach a t-junction, the entrance to Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetary is 100m on your left. To continue to Sligo, turn right.
When you reach [75km marker] the next t-junction, turn right on Ballydoogan Road.
Soon you enter Sligo town. Keep straight on this road for 1.8km. A few metres before you reach the dual carriageway, turn left on Wolfe Tone St.
The train station entrance is at the end of this road, straight ahead of you and behind the bus station.
