Baltimore Cork to Kinsale Cycle Directions

Section 1

0 to 10km

Facing inland, turn left from the ferry slip road to go along by the water. This road bends right and goes uphill to the main street, where you turn left.

You soon leave the village. After a sharp left bend, you ride beside the water briefly. After crossing a stone bridge and another sharp left, take the immediate right turn.

Ignore all turnoffs for 3km [5km marker] and you then have a steep descent to Lough Hyne. You cycle along the shore for 200 metres. Pass the lake, ignore a left turn and then take the next right.. After going up a hill you reach a t-junction. Go right, down the hill and then take the first left turn.

Turn right at the t-junction you reach.

Section 2

10 – 20km

Go up the hill, then go left up the narrow road at the next turnoff. Take the first right turn and it is a short descent into Bawnlahan, turning right at the large carpark.

Go straight through Bawnlahan. The road goes south and winds around a headland with nice views [15km marker]. It dips inland again and you go through a crossroads. From here it is 5.1km to Castletownshend.

Section 3

20 – 30km

In Castletownshend you turn left at a t-junction. Ignore all turnoffs.

Leaving Castletownshend you climb a short hill. Take the first right turn, at a crossroads, after reaching the top. 2.1km later [25km marker], go right at a t-junction. You cycle past water on your right and stay on this road all the way up a hill and down again to Union Hall.

Stay on the road as it takes you past a church and turns left along the harbour. Turn right after the harbour.

Section 4

30 – 40km

You soon reach a t-junction with the R597 after crossing a narrow bridge. Turn right here, signed Glandore.

Go through Glandore and up the hill on the other side, staying on the R597. At the top of the hill you see a right turn signed Drombeg Stone Circle. The stone circle is just a short way up here, on the right. Return to the main road and continue on the R597 [35km marker].

You go down a hill and then over another before you reach a t-junction with the N71 at the edge of Rosscarbery. Turn right here.

You cross the small bay on the N71.

Section 5

40 – 50km

After the road goes up a hill, take the first right turn on the R598 signed Rathbarry. After two bends it runs beside a long beach. You then go over a small hill and take the first right turn on the L4006, signed Galley Head. Keep going [45km marker] straight and up a steep hill until you reach a crossroads.

The road ahead is a cul de sac and the right turn is signed Galley Head. Its a 4km return trip if you want to see the lighthouse there. Otherwise turn left.

You soon reach a t-junction where you turn right and go downhill to a quiet beach. Stay on this road as it goes up.

Section 6

50 – 60km

Take the third right turn (as the main road bends left) up a narrow road over the top of the hill. It bends left, then right and then right, then left and at the end of the descent after ignoring turnoffs you reach the very small Dunnycove Bay, sandwiched between two hills.

After going past the bay, keep right when the road forks, and then turn right when you reach a crossroads after going up a long, steep hill. For the next 5.7km this road winds [55km marker] around a headland, eventually giving fine views of Inchydoney Island. Turn right when you eventually reach a crossroads.

Section 7

60 – 70km

Follow this road for 2.9km into Clonakilty. Turn right on the N71 when you reach the t-junction in the town after going down a hill.

After passing the water you reach a roundabout. Take the last exit and then turn left immediately by the house on the roundabout. Follow this road uphill, ignoring a right turn just after passing an estate. Keep going [65km marker].

Turn right at the t-junction with the R600, then take the second left up a narrow road. Go uphill, through a crossroads and you have some great views. Ignore a left turn at a very wide junction.

Section 8

70 – 80km

At the next t-junction, turn right to go downhill to Timoleague. At the end of the road, turn right, then immediately left and cycle down to the friary. Walk a few yards straight past it to the main road and turn left.

Then turn right over a bridge at the t-junction with the R600. Then take the frst right on the R602, signed Bandon and Kinsale.

Follow the road along the coast [75km marker] for 9.1km.

Section 9

80 – 90km

You cross a long bridge. Turn right at the t-junction on the other side, signed Kinsale. Stay on the main road as it climbs a hill [85km marker]. After descending the other side you reach a t-junction. Turn left here, signed Kinsale. You then cycle into Ballinspittle. Follow the main road around a left hand bend as it leaves the town.

The grotto is 900m outside town, on a left turn, going steadily uphill. There is a hill opposite where the crowds gathered to watch the statue in 1985. Continue on this road.

Section 10

90 – 98km

Ignore a turn as it bends right.

After passing another left turn, you reach a staggered crossroads. Turn left here, go uphill and take the first right. You go over a hill [95km marker] and turn left at the t-junction with the R600, after a steep descent.

Cycle across the bridge into Kinsale. The road bends right after the bridge and goes around a hill. Stay on the main road until you reach the car park on the quay.
