This ride heads north from Sligo towards the magnificent Benbulben. It hugs the north side of the Dartry mountains before turning south and returning to Sligo past the beautiful Glencar Waterfall.

There is an optional 10km trip along the Gleniff Horseshoe, which is well worth a look.

The Dartry Mountains are some of the most spectacular in Ireland and it is an idyllic setting for cyclists.


Sligo Abbey is easily seen in the centre of the town, just off-route.

Drumcliffe – Visit the grave of W.B. Yeats at the foot of Benbulben.

Benbulben – This tour takes us right around the magnificent mountain and through some of the nicest parts of Yeats Country.

Gleniff Horseshoe – this scenic road is an option that adds 10 kilometres to the day.

Glencar Waterfall – Though only 15 metres high, it is famed for its beauty.

Benbulben Cycle Route Loop Useful Info

If you are looking for a route that stays on backroads, this is perfect for you. You are on main roads for just two very brief sections. There are some short, sharp climbs on the way to Glencar Lake, but the total amount of climbing is reasonable.

This route explores most of the roughly defined Yeats Country, which inspired the writer to create some of his most famous work.

Sligo is on the Dublin to Sligo train line, with around seven trains a day. Irish Rail has times and prices.

Bus Eireann has services to Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Letterkenny and Derry.
