Carrick-on-Shannon Arigna Loop Directions

Section 1

0 to 10km

From the train station, cycle out to the main road and turn left beneath the bridge. You soon reach a small roundabout, where you turn right and cross the river. At the roundabout there, turn right again.

This brings you along the southern edge of the town. At the next roundabout you reach, turn left, signed Town Centre.

After the road bends left, take a right turn on the R280, signed Manorhamilton and Ballinamore. Stay on this road as it leaves town [5km marker] and after 5.8km you reach Leitrim Village.

Stay on the R280 through the village and cycle up the hill on the other side. At the top, on the edge of the village, turn left on the narrow L7379. Stay on this road as it runs straight for 3.0km.

Section 2

10 – 20km

Turn left when you reach a t-junction. From here it is 3.5km to another t-junction, where you [15km marker] turn left again, signed Manorhamilton. After a few metres, you cross Mahanagh Bridge.

Take the first left on the R285, signed Sligo. Then take the first right turn and you soon start climbing in earnest. You go through a crossroads.

Section 3

20 – 30km

Then you pass two right turns as you climb. The left turn for the Arigna Mining Experience is just beyond this and clearly signed.

Continue uphill, in the direction that you were going. After 3.3km you pass a right turn and then the main road turns left, just after you pass a house. Turn off the main road to go straight and keep climbing [25km marker].

You pass into County Sligo. Stay on this road whaen it bends left and keep clmbing. Soon you reach the top.

Section 4

30 – 40km

On the gradual descent you pass a right turn and then keep left on the main road at the next turnoff. Ignore another right turn and then follow the main road [35km marker] when it turns sharply right into Geevagh, ignoring a narrow left. You soon reach a crossroads in the town. Turn left on the R284.

Take the first right, on the other side of a stone bridge after 1.6km. Keep on this narrow road through a crossroads.

Section 5

40 – 50km

Stay on this road until you reach a t-junction. Turn right. Soon you reach the crossroads at Knockmore where you turn left.

Keep on this very narrow road [45km marker] for 7.0km, going through two crossroads and past several turnoffs. When you finally reach a t-junction with the R285, turn right and cycle into Knockvicar. Take the first left turn in the village, signed Cootehall, just before the bridge.

Section 6

50 – 60km

Follow this road until you reach a t-junction, where you turn right and cycle into Cootehall. Take the first left turn, then go past the church and through the crossroads.

After 5.5km and after passing a lake [55km marker] you cross another bridge before reaching Carrick-on-Shannon.

Section 7

60 – 62km

Turn right when you reach the t-junction with the R280 (you left town on this road earlier).

This soon take you to Main St, where you turn right again. Costello Chapel is on the corner of Bridge Street, the first left turn. Continue down Bridge Street, go through the roundabout and cross the river.

Turn left at the first roundabout you reach. Soon you pass under the railway tracks and immediately turn right to go into the train station.
