Castlebar may not have the coastal glamour of nearby Westport but it has plenty to offer the cyclist all the same. There is plenty of flat countryside yet also mountains to look at in the north, west and south.

But since Westport attracts so many cycle tourists, this route is a neat nearby addition to what is available in the area.

There is only one short climb on this route and the views from the top are fantastic. The rest of the route is an easy ride provided it’s not a windy day.

Attractions

Turlough House Country Life Park – Step back in time at the National Museum of Ireland Country Life, a short distance from Castlebar.

Castlebar Mayo Cycle Loop Useful Info

Castlebar is a small town and easy to get in and out of on a bike.

Outside of Castlebar itself and a stretch of a few hundred metres on the N60, this entire route is on quiet country backroads.

Irish Rail runs several trains a day from Dublin Heuston to Westport, which stop at Castlebar.
