This cycle route starts in Castletownbere and takes you through some of the remotest and most beautiful parts of the Beara Peninsula –  a great cycling destination. You cycle out to Dursey Island at the western edge of the peninsula before riding along the northern coast towards Kenmare.

You can combine this with the Kenmare to Castletownbere ride for a great two-day trip.

Castletownbere is a popular fishing village in West Cork.

The Bere Island ferry takes you to the small, spectacular island a few kilometres away in the harbour.

A short side trip to Dunboy Castle ruins is possible.

Blackball Head Signal Tower was s one of over 60 towers built around the coast over 200 years ago. Each was within site of the next and a lit fire would warn of invasion. You can see it in the distance to the south when you reach the coastline for the first time.

Dursey Island – A single road runs along the south edge of the island, sections of it along the top of high cliffs. It is unlike anything else to be found in Ireland. The trip is well worth doing if you have the time. A cable car is the only way of reaching the island. It famously takes animals but not bikes.

Allihies is a typically colourful West Cork town in a lovely setting.

Allihies Copper Mine Museum is dedicated to telling the story of the copper mine above the  town which opened in 1812 and operated for several decades.

Allihies Copper Mine is situated on a hill above the town.

Knockoura Climb – a narrow road climbs this mountain to communication masts at the top at about 480m.

Glenbeg Lake is a remote lake in the mountains of the Beara Peninsula.

Gleninchaquin Park boasts a waterfall and great hiking paths. The narrow road to it makes for a great cycle and passes Uragh Stone Circle.

Kenmare is a popular heritage town in a beautiful location.

Kenmare Stone Circle is close to the centre of the town.
