Charleville Cork to Cappoquin Cycle Directions
0 to 10km
From Charleville Main Street, turn east on the R515 towards Kilmallock. As you leave the town you pass a right turn leading to a number of houses. Take the next right just after this.
Stay on this road through numerous corners [5km marker] and go left at a staggered crossroads by a pub.
Take the first right turn.
10 – 20km
The road narrows and after another 3.4km you reach a t-junction with several houses. Turn left for Ardpatrick and Kilfinane. After 1.8km you reach the R512. Turn right to go through Ardpatrick.
Go past the town and turn left at the first crossroads [15km marker]. Turn right when you reach a t-junction by a stone wall and arch. Follow this road to a t-junction and turn left, then immediately right. Keep on this road.
20 – 30km
Eventually you reach a t-junction with the R517 [25km marker]. Turn right. Soon the road turns sharply right and then left. At this second turn, take the narrow right turn.
Take the first left at the church, go up the hill, enjoy the fantastic views at the top and go down the short descent. Turn right at the t-junction with the R517 and go straight on.
30 – 40km
The road ends at Kilglass where you reach the R513 at a t-junction by the entrance to Mitchelstown golf club. Take a left here. Taking a right would take you to Mitchelstown in 2km.
Go north on the R513 from Kilglass. Take the first right hand turn at a wide junction [35km marker]. This road will take you along the south side of the Galtees. Ignore the numerous left turns on it.
40 – 50km
Eventually you reach a t-junction with the old Cork-Dublin road in Churchquarter. This road is wide but quiet now, as the motorway takes most of the traffic. Turn left – there is a good shoulder and views of the Galtees.
You stay on this road for 3.2km, taking the narrow second right turn after you pass under the motorway. On this road [45km marker], ignore all turnoffs and you will reach the Mitchelstown Caves after 4 kilometres.
From the caves, continue the way you were going and take the first right turn. When you reach a t-junction, turn right again.
50 – 60km
The next left is at a large, isolated tree next to a gate and a small house. Going straight will take you into Ballyporeen. From there you can turn left and take the R665 to Clogheen. If you don’t want to go into Ballyporeen, taking this left will take you to the R665 in 6.2km.
Ignore the other turnoffs [55km marker] and keep straight. Once you reach the t-junction with the R665, turn left and follow the sign for Clogheen. It is 1.5km away. The right turn for The Vee is in the centre of the town and signposted.
60 – 70km
From Clogheen it is 8.5km steadily uphill to the top of The Vee, a saddle in the Knockmealdown mountains on the border between Tipperary and Waterford. The actual hairpin bend is 2/3 of the way up and offers extraordinary views across the Golden Vale and the Galtees.
Keep going up [65km marker] and over the top.
Ballyin Junction is the first left hand turn on the descent of the other side. Take this left.
70 – 82km
This is downhill all the way [75km marker] on the R669. The Monboy turn off is the 3rd turn on the right. It is not signposted. It is located just after a left turn and goes slightly uphill next to a bungalow with a large garden and a low wall.
After you crest the hill it is a fun ride downhill (ignore a right turn) to the N72. Turn left and it’s a kilometre to Cappoquin.
