Cycle Galway to Clifden Directions

Section 1

0 to 10km

At the train station, turn left and a few metres away is the large Eyre Square. Go to the end of the square, and go left on Victoria Place down the narrow road. At the bottom of the hill, the road bends right.

Keep straight all the way, following the sign for Salthill. You pass the dock, go through a crossroads and the road bends right. Stay in the left lane and it will bend left and take you across a long bridge.

Take the first left after the bridge to head towards the coast. After 800m you pass a long pier. After another 700m you rejoin the main road at a t-junction, where you go left. This takes you along the seafront to a roundabout. Go left again to continue along Salthill beach.

The road goes inland [5km marker] and reaches a t-junction after 2.3km. Go left here, following the sign for Spiddal.

Follow the R336 to Rossaveal. You pass through the village of Barna.

Section 2

10 – 20km

Keep on the main road [15km] and you go through Spiddal.

Section 3

20 – 30km

Keep straight. The scenery becomes more rural as you travel west [25km]. Keep going.

Section 4

30 – 40km

After you pass through the tiny village of Ballynahown the R336 bends right, going north. You are in the Gaeltacht now so follow the sign for Ros a Mhil (Rossaveal) which is 7km further on [35km marker]. The next left turn has a sign for the ferry. Take it if you are going to the Aran Islands. Otherwise go straight on.

After 1.7km take the first right following the R336 for Scriob and Rosmuc.

Section 5

40 – 50km

You keep north and pass by a couple of lakes [45km marker]. Keep going.

Section 6

50 – 62km

You reach a t-junction at Screbe (Scriob). Go left on the R340 here, following the sign for Carna.

Ride west [55km marker] and after 6.5km you pass Inverbeg Lough on your right. Soon after you cross a small bridge. Here, take the first right turn since Screbe. It is not signed.

Section 7

60 – 70km

You travel on this [65km marker] for 9.6km through empty countryside before it rejoins the R340 which loops around the coast – the road you cycled was a shortcut. At the junction with the R340, turn right for Recess. Then take the first left, signed for Cashel and Roundstone, a few hundred yards later. You pass a few houses at Cashel.

Section 8

70 – 80km

Keep on this road [75km marker] and after 8.3km you reach a t-junction. Turn left and immediately go over a bridge at Tombeeola.

After 1.7km, take the first right turn, where the road bends left. It is signed Clifden.

Section 9

80 – 91km

Keep stright [85km marker] It is 9.4km through exposed bogland before you rejoin the R341. Turn right here to go north and it is only 3.6km to Clifden. Follow the one-way system through the town to a roundabout. Take the right turn to reach the junction with the N59.
