Cycle Sligo Рthis amazing ride takes you north past the beautiful Dartry Mountains. You cycle around the magnificent Benbulben and through some of the nicest part of Yeats Country. The Gleniff Horseshoe is optional but probably the highlight of the trip.

You visit Creevykeel Court Tomb before you continue west over a low mountain pass and then on to Lough Navar Forest with its famous viewpoint over Lough Erne. Finish by descending to Enniskillen. Cycle Sligo to Enniskillen for a tough but rewarding day in a part of Ireland too often ignored by tourists. This route is one of the best in the region.

Attractions

Sligo Abbey is a little way off the route in the centre of the town.

Drumcliffe – Visit the grave of W.B. Yeats – one of Ireland’s greatest writers. The area around Drumcliffe is known as Yeats Country and inspired much of his work.

The Gleniff Horseshoe is a beautiful 10km loop in the Dartry Mountains.

Creevykeel Court Tomb – one of the most impressive in the country.

Lough Navar Forest Drive has extraordinary views over Lough Erne and is worth the climb up to it.

Tully Castle is only a short diversion away – an extra 7 kilometres – and is well worth seeing. It sits on the shore of Lough Erne.

Enniskillen Castle contains 2 museums.

Cycle Sligo – Useful Information

The vast majority of this route is on quiet back roads, apart from a short section outside Sligo at Drumcliffe, where there is a good shoulder, and the last couple of kilometres on the run in to Enniskillen.

Sligo is on the Dublin to Sligo train line. There are around seven trains a day. Irish Rail has times and prices.

Bus Eireann has services to Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Letterkenny and Derry.

This is part of the 2-day Sligo to Derry route, which is a great way of seeing the area if you want to cycle Sligo or Fermanagh. From Enniskillen it heads north through Gortin Glen towards the Sperrin Mountains, and enters Derry City on the Foyle Valley Bicycle Path.

There is also a 2-day ride from the cycle hub of Westport. This cycle tour goes through the remotest parts of Mayo and across the Ox Mountains and is an excellent route to reach Sligo by if you are cycling between the two towns.
