Cycle Westport – Doo Lough Loop Directions
0 to 10km
On leaving the train station turn right, away from the town centre. The road goes under the railway tracks and bends left. After 900m there is a narrow right turn up a short hill. There is a small stone wall on the right side of the main road leading to it. Take it. When you reach the first t-junction go right. Croagh Patrick can be seen in the distance. You then take the second right turn, signed Lanmore and Lankill [5km marker].
Stay on this road as it bends left at the next turnoff. Stay on this road as it bends left and goes through a crossroads and on to reach another crossroads with the N59. Go straight through.
10 – 20km
Keep straight on this road [5km marker]for 6.4km until you reach the tiny village of Drummin. You pass a church and a shrine. Keep going straight, signed Leenane.
You cycle toward the Sheefry Hills.
20 – 30km
After climbing Sheeffry Pass, you descend past Tawnyard Lough and then travel through a quiet valley [25km marker] to reach the R335 at Doo Lough. Turn right for Louisburgh.
30 – 40km
Continue uphill past Doo Lough and Glencuilin Lough. The hill becomes very steep here but soon levels off. From the top of the pass it is [35km marker] 7.2km to the first right turn, which occurs on a left-hand bend. Take it.
40 – 50km
Take the second right, not far away in a wooded area [45km marker]. Take the next left onto a narrow road with a poor surface. It doesn’t last long, however, as you soon reach a crossroads where you go straight through. At the next t-junction you turn right, and then left at the t-junction you reach soon after that. You go up a hill.
50 – 56km
Then you descend down to the R335, with fine views of the ocean. Go right on the R335 and enter Lecanvey.
Cycle west through Lecanvey on the R335. The bulk of Croagh Patrick is clearly visible on your right. Keep straight on this road [55km marker] through Murrisk. Keep going straight.
60 – 66km
Eventually you reach a t-junction with the N59. Go left over a stone bridge. Then immediately go right [65km marker] and down into the town centre. Pass the Obelisk and carry on downhill. Just before you cross the bridge, turn right on the South Mall.
Go through a crossroads and the road bends left by a green. Turn right at this junction and then immediately left and continue straight uphill. The train station is 500m away on this road, on your right.
