Cycle Westport – head south towards Connemara through quiet countryside. The highlight of the trip is the gentle climb and fast descent of Sheefry Pass to the remote Tawnyard Lough before you reach the short climb up the famous Doo Lough valley.

You then have a fairly easy ride back to Westport past Croagh Patrick.

The Sheeffry Hills are an underrated beauty spot, and Sheeffry Pass takes you over them.

Doo Lough Pass is one of the outstanding scenic roads in Ireland and was featured in the film Leap Year.

Croagh Patrick is Ireland’s holiest mountain and a famous pilgrimage site.

Part of the second half of this route is on R roads, and experience of road cycling would be advised. The last few kilometres of the road to Westport has an excellent cycle lane.

Westport is the most popular destination in Ireland for cyclists and works hard to attract them. The local scenery is outstanding.

Irish Rail has several trains a day from Dublin (Heuston) and Athlone to Westport.

Bus Eireann has the following services, each running several times per day: Dublin, Athlone, Ireland West Airport (Knock), Ballina, Castlebar, Galway, Limerick and Cork.
