Hill of Tara Cycle Loop Directions
0 to 10km
Cycle through the main entrance on the east side of the Phoenix Park and up the hill. Turn right at the roundabout you reach. The road then bends left and follows the northern edge of the park, going slightly uphill.
After 3.2km it bends to the left and goes downhill slightly to a roundabout. Turn right at the roundabout and [5km marker] exit the park.
Keep straight for 1.6km after leaving the park and you reach another roundabout. Go straight through and you pass over the M50.
Keep straight and you pass over the railway tracks before reaching a t-junction. Turn left. You go straight through a crossroads in Blanchardstown.
Go through the next crossroads and then turn right at the roundabout at Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. You cross a bridge over the N3.
Go down the hill and go straight through the next roundabout. From here on the roads should be quieter.
10 – 20km
Take the first right turn after 600 metres. Go through the first roundabout. The next roundabout is very large – take the third exit. Now you are in Tyrellstown. Go straight through the next two roundabouts in quick succession.
Keep straight and you finally leave the city properly. When you reach another roundabout, go left and you pass through Hollystown.
You cycle [15km marker] up a long straight. After 3.7km you pass a church on your right. Continue to ignore all turnoffs and stay on this road.
20 – 30km
Eventually you reach a t-junction. Turn left to go into Rathoath.
When you get to a roundabout, take the second exit [25km marker]. When you reach a shrine directly ahead, with a church on your left, take the road that goes to the right of the shrine and go through the crossroads you soon reach.
This road has no significant turns for 9.5km. You pass through a crossroads after 2.2km and another after 4.6km.
30 – 40km
Turn left at the [35km marker] third crossroads, after 9.5km, beside a pub. 1.9km later you pass over the motorway, and turn right at the t-junction with the R147 that you reach soon after.
40 – 50km
Take the second left turn. The Hill of Tara is at the end of the road. If you don’t stop here, turn left at the t-junction.
Continue south [45km marker] and turn right at the t-junction after 4.4km, signed Dunsany. Turn left at the next t-junction and follow this road through a roundabout towards Dunshaughlin.
50 – 60km
You reach Dunshaughlin after crossing over the motorway and then going straight through another roundabout. At the main crossroads with the R147 in Dunshaughlin, turn right and then take the first left around the corner.
You leave the village on this road by taking the first right turn when this road bends left. Then you ignore a left turn cul-de-sac [55km marker]. Turn left at the t-junction you reach and then right at the crossroads with the R125.
Stay on this road as you enter Ratoath. As you enter the town go through the first roundabout and then take the third exit at the next roundabout.
You go straight through the next roundabout and leave town on the R155.
60 – 70km
Soon you pass the entance to the Fairyhouse Racecourse. Take the second left turn after this, which is unsigned. Keep going [65km marker] and turn right when you reach a t-junction.
When you reach a t-junction beside a business park, turn left on the R147.
70 – 80km
Stay on this road as it crosses the motorway.
Then, after going through two roundabouts you enter Clonee.
Take the first right turn, opposite a small car park, signed Lucan. Cycle past a housing estate on the left and then take the first right. Stay on this road as it bends sharply left. You cross into County Dublin and take the next left turn, down a narrow road.
After several [75km marker] bends the road goes over a canal and then through train tracks. Soon you reach a t-junction at a bend, where you go right. After 1.6km you reach a t-junction with the R109. Turn left here and stay on this road all the way to the Phoenix Park.
80 – 88km
You pass under the motorway. Then it is 1.8km to the first entrance to the Phoenix Park (on the left by Mount Sackville Convent – entering here and then turning right will take you through the park to the finish point of the route if you want to avoid the road).
Here you keep right and go downhill. At the end of the hill, keep left at the junction and then it’s another [85km marker] 3km to the eastern entrance.
