Joyce Country – Westport to Cong Cycle Directions
0 to 10km
On leaving the train station turn right, away from the town centre. The road goes under the railway tracks and bends left. After 900m there is a narrow right turn up a hill. There is a small stone wall on the right side of the main road leading to it. Take it.
When you reach the first t-junction go right. Croagh Patrick can be seen in the distance. You then take the second right turn, signed Lanmore and Lankill [5km marker].
Stay on this road as it bends left at the next turnoff. You go steadily uphill through some trees to reach a small crossroads. Go left here.
You go south now and straight through a crossroads, following the sign for Tourmakeady. Go up a small hill.
10 – 20km
Descend the other side to an isolated house where you ignore a right turn. Keep left, signed Tourmakeady.
Keep straight on this road as it climbs [15km marker] gradually uphill for 7km. There are superb views from the top, where you see Lough Mask for the first time. Continue down the other side.
20 – 30km
Descend the barren eastern side. After passing the first right turn the road rises slightly. Keep right at the next corner and Lough Mask soon comes back into view.
Continue downhill and turn right at the R300 at the t-junction in Tourmakeady [25km marker].
After 1.7km, take the first right on the L26002 in a cluster of houses. Stay straight on the road as it climbs uphill for several kilometres for fantastic views of Lough Mask.
30 – 40km
After you reach the top, go downhill and take the first left. Keep left and ignore two right turns on the way down and you reach a t-junction after a twisting descent. Go right on the R300.
Keep going [35km marker] until you reach a t-junction after 3.3km.
Turn right and stay on this road as it goes up a short hill. Near the top turn left on the L16005, ignoring the left a few metres later. Go straight over the ridge ahead.
Enjoy the great views of Lough Nafooey on your right on the descent. At the bottom you reach the R300 again – turn left at this t-junction.
40 – 50km
Take the next right turn, on a very narrow road opposite a church. You soon cross a small river and take the first left.
You are soon riding alongside a spur of Lough Mask. The surface is rough at times but keep going [45km marker]. When you finally reach a t-junction turn left across a bridge.
Soon you reach the opposite shore of Lough Mask. Keep going alongside it.
50 – 60km
Eventually you reach a t-junction. Turn left, signed Clonbur. Keep on this road [55km marker].
When you reach a t-junction, turn right. You are back on the R300. Go up a short rise and there are two narrow right turns beside each other. Take the second one.
Ignore two right turns on this road until you reach a t-junction. Turn right here.
This road steadily climbs. Take the first left turn. Ignore the patchy surface and keep straight.
You reach a t-junction with houses on each side and ahead. Turn right here.
Take the first left down a narrow road. Soon you go down a hill and through a crossroads with the R345.
You go up a narrow road with stone walls on both sides and great views behind you.
When you reach the first t-junction, go right and the road immediately bends left. Stay on this road (ignore a right turn on a left hand bend) for another 3.4km and it rejoins the R345. Go right at the t-junction, go around the corner and you enter Cong.
