Joyce Country – Westport to Cong Cycle
Photo Gallery ///
This tour goes south from Westport through Connemara, past Lough Mask and through the mountains of Joyce Country on the edge of eastern Connemara before finishing in the famous tourist village of Cong on the border between Galway and Mayo.
You ride through a beautiful part of Ireland between the mountains and Lough Mask, through Mayo and Galway.
The route has plenty of short climbs on it, and very few flat sections.
You can combine this with a number of other rides in Westport – The Great Western Greenway, Westport – Doo Lough Loop or Westport – Croagh Patrick Loop.
Lough Mask and Lough Corrib are the largest in the west of Ireland, and you get great views of both.
Connemara is famous for its wild beauty, and this route passes alongside the eastern edge of it. This is very much Ireland’s Wild West. Joyce Country – the area around Lough Mask – is so named as it is the ancestral home of James Joyce.
Cong Abbey is a well-preserved 13th Century building in Cong.
The Quiet Man Cottage is a replica of the one featured in the famous film.
