Knockmealdowns Cycle Loop Directions
0 to 10km
Head south from the main square. Turn left at the first crossroads on Brigown Road. It is signed Araglin. This takes you out of the town and over the motorway. From this bridge you can see the Galtees on your left. On the other side of the bridge take the first left on the L5659, signed Araglin.
The road forks twice – stay on the main road. The road climbs slowly uphill [5km marker] and you go through a thick wood at the top. On the descent you go through a crossroads. Continue downhill.
10 – 20km
Stay on this road until you come to a t-junction at a sharp bend. Go left.
Follow [15km marker] this road for 2.5km to the tiny village of Araglin and cycle straight through. Here you cross into County Tipperary. After another 1.7km you reach the Swallow Inn and carpark. Take the left turn here up a hill. This is the start of a significant climb.
The road winds uphill. Take the first right along a narrow road where the main road bends left. There are nice views behind you.
20 – 30km
Ignore the first left and then keep left soon after where the road forks. Enjoy the final part of the climb as the road kicks up [25km marker] to over 420m with superb views.
The descent is a straightforward spin down, with fine views of the Galtees ahead.
30 – 40km
Keep going until you reach a crossroads at the bottom. Go right here on the R665 and ride 1.5km to Clogheen Village. Take the right turn signed The Vee.
From Clogheen [35km marker] it is 8.5km steadily uphill to the top of The Vee, a saddle in the Knockmealdown mountains on the border between Tipperary and Waterford. The actual hairpin bend is 2/3 of the way up and offers extraordinary views across the Golden Vale and the Galtees. Keep going up.
40 – 50km
After going over the top, take the first left hand turn on the descent on the other side. Go gradually downhill [45km marker] on the R669 for 8.9km.
50 – 60km
You reach the second left turn on this road at The Cats Bar, signed Mount Melleray. Take it [55km marker]. The monastery is 2km up this road.
Continue past the monastery. The road is quite flat for a period, then kicks up to the summit of the last climb of the day, at almost 400m.
60 – 70km
Cross over the top. The long, quiet descent on the other side is enjoyable. After a while, take the first left turn, which runs slightly uphill [65km marker]. When you reach a t-junction, turn left. From here it is 10.9km to Clogheen.
70 – 80km
Keep going on this road [75km marker]. When you finally reach a t-junction you meet the road you climbed up to the Vee on. Go right and into the town.
Turn left at the t-junction in the town and ride out of the town on the R665. After leaving the town take the second right turn, at a crossroads.
80 – 90km
This back route to Ballyporeen turns sharply left, goes through a crossroads and [85km marker] reaches a t-junction. Turn left here and ride into Ballyporeen, where you turn right at the crossroads with the R665.
90 – 100km
Turn left onto a narrow road when the main road bends right. After a couple of km this road bends sharply right. Ignore the first right turn, but when the road rises, take the next right.
Go through a crossroads and keep straight [95km marker]. You reach an unusual crossroads. Ignore the right and left turns and go straight ahead – now you return to Mitchelstown the way that you came – over the motorway and right at the crossroads in the town.
