Macroom to Limerick Cycle Directions
0 to 10km
On the eastern edge of Macroom, turn north and downhill over the river on the R618, signed Coachford. You cross a bridge and then turn left at the next corner. Stay on this road as it bends right immediately. You will climb very gradually for the next five kilometres. After 4.0km, the main road bends left at a crossroads, and [5km marker] 1.1km later it bends right at a crossroads.
Keep straight on this road and you will reach the school and pub at Inchaleagh.
Continue through Inchaleagh, keeping left when the road forks, past the pub and straight on.
10 – 20km
When the road forks again, keep left and go uphill. When you reach a crossroads turn left again. Then take the first left turn. You soon reach a t-junction where you turn left yet again and cycle into Aghabullogue.
Take the first right after passing the church. Go uphill, through a crossroads [15km marker], then down the other side. You go through a sharp corner and two more crossroads as you climb another hill. After another short descent, turn left on the R619 at a t-junction. Follow this for 2.6km (and through a crossroads) to Donoughmore.
20 – 30km
The main road turns sharply right by Sully’s Pub in Donoughmore, then goes left. 1.0km later, the main road bends left at a crossroads by a pub. There are two right turns, one going to the right and one going straight. Go straight, up the hill. Turn right at the first crossroads and shortly after take the first left.
Stay on this road through numerous bends [25km marker] until you reach a staggered crossroads with a farm building on your left. Turn left, and left again at the t-junction shortly after.
Then, after a few metres, take the first right turn.
30 – 40km
Keep straight on this road through several turns [35km marker]. You go through a 5-road crossroads. When you reach a t-junction you rejoin the R619. Turn right, go down the hill into Dromahane and turn right at the first crossroads.
Go down a hill and turn right when you reach a t-junction, then immediately turn left at the next t-junction. You cross under both the railway and the N20. Keep straight on this road into the town.
40 – 50km
Go through a crossroads, over a bridge anad keep straight to reach a small roundabout in the centre of town. Go straight through it, following the sign for Fermoy.
Take the first left and follow a twisting road up a hill. Turn right at the t-junction at the top. Follow this road out of the town [45km marker] and after 1.8km you climb uphill and the first crossroads you reach (after a descent) is Fountainville.
You turn right and just a few metres later take the left beside the houses.
50 – 60km
Keep straight on this road and at the second crossroads you go through you pass the R522. The road narrows. Keep straight, through a crossroads and [55km marker] turn right when you reach a t-junction. Shortly after, the main road bends right – take the narrow left turn here which goes straight ahead.
1.7km later you come to a t-junction with a wider road. Turn left here and then immediately take the narrow right. The mountains ahead are the Ballyhouras and you now have a stiff climb up the western edge of them. The views from the top are worth it.
60 – 70km
Descend the other side and you pass through a crossroads.
2 km later, turn right at the next crossroads, in Ardskeagh [65km marker].
Take the first left, immediately after crossing the railway tracks. Keep straight and after 3.8km you reach a t-junction. Go left.
Go left again at the next t-junction.
Shortly after, you take the second right, on a left hand bend.
70 – 80km
This soon brings you to a crossroads with the R515, where you go straight through. Follow this road through several bends [75km marker] and you will reach a t-junction beside a church in Kilmallock.
Kilmallock Friary is a short way to the right if you want to see it. Otherwise turn left. After crossing a bridge, keep right on the R512.
80 – 90km
This will bring you all the way [85km marker] to Bruff.
Ride straight through Bruff. Holycross is the second crossroads you reach. If you want to visit Lough Gur, take the right turn beside Reardon’s Pub. Otherwise continue straight on.
90 – 100km
Keep going straight. At the first crossroads you reach, turn right on the L8010. After 2.5km you reach a t-junction with the R512, where you turn right. From here it is 6.6km to [95km marker] the crossroads at Ballyneety.
100 – 110km
Pass the thatched cottage at the crossroads and continue straight ahead.
Take the first right turn up a very narrow road after passing the thatched cottage. Turn right at a t-junction after a short downhill section, then go through a crossroads before [105km marker] rejoining the wider R512, where you turn right at a crossroads by a farmhouse. You pass over the motorway and enter the outskirts of Limerick City. Keep straight and turn right at Kilmallock Roundabout, beside the train tracks.
There is a cycle path here. Go through the next roundabout and then cycle 1.0km to the Parkway Roundabout. The fourth exit is signed Dublin.
