Mallow to Ballyvourney Cycle Directions
0 to 10km
At Mallow train station, go downhill to the main road and walk a few metres to the right to reach The Roundabout Inn at the large roundabout on the N20. This route goes west on the N72 under the railway bridge. Take the first left turn, after 3.9km. There is a sign for Coachford.
You cross the Blackwater river and [5km marker] take the first right turn where the main road swerves left. Stay on this road and in 4.9km you reach Glantane.
10 – 20km
There is a high cross at the main junction. Keep right at the high cross and then take the first left turn, after 2km. Go straight through the crossroads at Gortroe. Keep going uphill [15km marker].
Stay on the road and ignore all turnoffs on the descent until you reach the R579. Turn left and ride the kilometre into Nadd.
Take the right turn uphill straight after passing Nadd Pub.
20 – 30km
It is a steady [25km marker] 6.5km uphill climb. Just after reaching the top, where there are great views ahead, take a left turn along a road with a good surface through a forest. There is a 4.5km descent.
30 – 40km
When you reach the first crossroads, take a left turn here. Stay on this road for 4.9km as it climbs steadily uphill past several turnoffs and through a crossroads [35km marker]. You reach a Yield sign. Follow the signs for Rylane and The Butter Road to go uphill to the left.
It is 3km to the top of The Butter Road.
40 – 50km
On the descent, take the first right turn, by a farm house. It is a sharp turn and easy to miss. This road winds around the mountain. After a short descent, take the next right. You are on the shoulder of Musheramore now and at this junction there is a fine standing stone on the hill a short way above the road [45km marker].
At the next fork in the road, go right again. The road here gets very narrow but soon you emerge on to a road with a better surface. Turn right and it is a 3.8km climb to the saddle.
50 – 60km
A few yards before the top, where Millstreet Country Park is located, take the second of two left turns which are located next to each other. Go over the top, then ride downhill to take the first left turn, on a right hand bend. After 200m, take a right [55km marker]. At the next t-junction you reach, go right and then immediately left. From here it is 700m to Carrigacooleen Crossroads.
Go straight through the crossroads. It is a steady 8.4km climb uphill.
60 – 70km
Ignore one left turn on the way up. At the top of the pass you can see the Mullaghanish TV mast ahead. It is [65km marker] 2km downhill, with fantastic views, to the gate to Mullaghanish, on the right hand side.
###Optional detour up Mullaghanish###
###7km return – 350m climbing###
It’s a tough one but the surface is good. It is a private road so take care on the descent if there is anybody walking. A classic climb. Of course if you don’t fancy it you can just continue downhill to Ballyvourney.
From here it is an easy 3km spin down to the Cork – Killarney N22 road in Ballyvourney. Keep left at the first two junctions on the way down.
