This loop is a short tour of the beautiful Golden Vale, famous for its scenic location between two prominent mountain ranges – The Galtees and The Knockmealdowns.

The area is famous for the high quality of its land and its dairy-farming.

The route only has one short climb, on the return to Mitchelstown. If visibility is good, this is a massively rewarding day out.

This route runs near the Charleville - Cappoquin ride, while the Mitchelstown – Knockmealdowns Loop explores the Knockmealdown Mountains in detail.

Attractions

The Mitchelstown Caves are a spectacular limestone cave system with the remarkable Tower of Babel.

Ballyporeen is the ancestral home of former US President Ronald Reagan, which he visited in 1984.

Mitchelstown Caves Cycle Loop Useful Info

Although you leave Mitchelstown on the N73, it runs parallel to the motorway, which takes most of the traffic. There is a good wide shoulder on this road so it’s a reasonably pleasant ride.

There is also a brief section on the R665 before you return to the backroads.

There is no train station in Mitchelstown but Bus Eireann runs a bus service from Cork.
