Mizen Head to Macroom Cycle Directions
0 to 10km
Leave Mizen Head and soon you pass the lovely Barleycove Beach. Turn right when you reach a t-junction and you pass a stretch of water [5km marker]. Stay on this road and ignore all turnoffs.
Eventually you pass a sign for Goleen and turn left at the crossroads a few metres later.
10 – 20km
Soon you reach a crossroads in the centre of Goleen village, where you turn left on the R591. Follow this road out of the village, over a very small bridge and past numerous turnoffs.
Take the next left turn on a very wide right hand bend. Ignore a couple of left turns and pass a small hill on your right. Go down a hill and around a sharp bend.
Turn right at the t-junction that you reach and keep right on the higher road as the road forks immediately. You have greet views of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula to the north [15km marker].
You pass a ruin and keep straight until you reach a t-junction. Turn left, signed Durrus.
30 – 40km
Ignore all turnoffs and you reach a small green in the centre of the village of Durrus. Go past it, up the main street and turn right off the main road when the road forks.
Continue on this quiet country road [35km marker]. When you reach a staggered crossroads with the N71 just go straight through.
40 – 50km
You pass through a crossroads and turn right at a t-junction with the R586. You immediately pass right and left turns.
Turn left at the next crossroads opposite the Colomane Pub, signed Trawlebane. Then turn right down a narrow road at the first crossroads that you soon reach [45km marker].
Keep along this narrow road and go through the first crossroads in the tiny village of Dromore. Continue past the church.
Then you go up a hill and through another crossroads. Keep right when the road forks. Keep straight.
50 – 60km
Eventually you reach a t-junction, with two walls and a driveway directly ahead. Turn left here and go uphill. Keep going up to a t-junction, where you turn right, signed Dunmanway [55km marker].
You see a castle ahead of you and cross a bridge. Immediately there are two left turns. Take the second turn that goes ahead and up a hill.
Stay on this road over the top of a hill with fine views. Go down the short descent and left at the next crossroads.
60 – 70km
When the road forks, keep left and go downhill. Go over a hill and along a long straight. Keep straight through a crossroads [65km marker]. Turn left when you finally reach a t-junction.
Stay on this road until you reach a t-junction with the R585. You aren’t on this road for long. Go through a crossroads and then take the next left up a narrow road, signed Kealkill.
70 – 80km
As you go around a right-hand corner, ignore the left turn. Pass another left and when the road forks soon after, keep left. Keep left again at the next fork.
You climb a steep hill. There are fantastic views from the top. Go down [75km marker] the other side. When you reach a fork, turn left to continue downhill.
When you reach a t-junction at the bottom of the hill turn right. Then turn left into Inchigeelagh when you reach a very wide t-junction.
Cross a stone bridge and turn right at the t-junction with the R584. You pass a church.
80 – 90km
You leave the village and take the first right turn. It’s a very narrow road but the surface improves after a while. Ride gradually up a hill with great views and down [85km marker] the other side. Ignore all turnoffs.
Continue all the way to a t-junction where you turn right. You cross a bridge and turn left immediately after. This road splits right away so keep left here.
90 – 97km
Stay on this road and you pass a body of water (the River Lee) before this road bends left twice in quick succession, both with right turns you ignore.
Keep going [95km marker]. You cross a bridge and turn right at a t-junction with the R584. Soon you reach a t-junction with the N22 – turn left to ride into Macroom.
