Slieve Gullion Cycle Loop Directions
0 to 10km
From the train station, cross the motorway and go straight down the steep hill to the main road. Turn right here and go uphill. Take the first exit (left) at the roundabout and then take the first right turn.
Cycle around two corners and the third corner is a sharp right. Take the immediate left turn. You are just outside Newry now.
When you go down a hill and reach a roundabout, turn right. Then take the first left. Keep straight until you reach a t-junction and turn left.
Go through the estate and when you reach another t-junction turn right, up the hill.
Now take the first left, signed Flagstaff Viewpoint and just before an overhead bridge [5km marker].
This is Flagstaff Road. Stay on it as it narrows and climbs up to a viewpoint over Carlingford Lough. Eventually you reach a t-junction. The short way up to Flagstaff Viewpoint is on your right but after that you go left and downhill.
10 – 20km
Descend to the first crossroads and turn right. You will pass through a crossroads and head towards the mountains [15km marker].
The road climbs gently and you reach another crossroads. Take the narrow right turn that goes up a very steep hill and is signed Tain Way. This is the climb to Clermont Carn.
The views over the peninsula on the way up are amazing. At the top you turn right at the t-junction but by going left you can add a side trip to the TV mast. It’s not far.
20 – 30km
Descend all the way down to the first t-junction and go left. Continue down to the next junction [35km marker] and go left again.
You pass by the Carrickdale Hotel and reach a roundabout. Take the second exit to cross the motorway and then re-enter Northern Ireland. Take the first right and you will reach the village of Meigh after 3.3km.
At the crossroads by Murphy’s Pub just after you reach the village turn left towards Slieve Gullion.
30 – 40km
The third right is the distinctive entrance to Slieve Gullion Forest Park. When the road forks beside a restaurant, keep left. Go past the carpark, and turn left, uphill. The drive is a one way system. It is 4.8km from here to the top. Keep climbing [35km marker]. After reaching the top the descent is twisty.
40 – 50km
After a short, sharp uphill section it descends again. When you reach a fork, keep right and downhill.
When you reach a t-junction at the bottom, turn right and then take the first right soon after on the Cloghinny Road. Stay on this for 2.1km as it curves left [45km marker] and you will reach a t-junction with Loughfield Road. Take a right.
Soon you pass a right turn on this long straight road.
50 – 60km
Take the next right a few kilometres later, Ballard Road, signed Ballintemple Viewpoint. Go up this hill and down the other side [55km marker]. On the descent take the second left turn.
Soon you turn left at the first crossroads. As you reach Carnlough Lake, you pass a right turn – Tamnaghbane Road. Take the next right – a narrow road bending around a hill.
Climb this and enjoy the views.
60 – 66km
Turn right when you go downhill to a t-junction. Ride on and take the next left down a narrow road. Then turn right at a t-junction with the A25.
Follow this road around a corner and along a straight [65km marker] to a roundabout underneath the motorway. Go underneath, past the off-ramp, left off the roundabout and immediately take the sharp left up the hill.
At the end of the road go left to cross the motorway and reach the train station.
