Wexford Town Cycle Loop Directions
0 to 10km
From the train station take the road straight ahead that passes to the left of the Obelisk on Redmond Square. This bends right and passes the Westgate Tower which will be on your left. Then it reaches a t-junction.
Take a left here on Spawell Road as you pass the distinctive stone facade of the Wexford County Council buildings. Go through a roundabout. In the next 500m you pass two estate entrances on your left. Take the third left – The Old Hospital Road.
Follow this for 2.3km until you reach a t-junction. Go left, under the railway bridge. You will reach a t-junction with the N11 after the next corner.
If you wish to visit the Irish National Heritage Park, turn left on the N11, then take the first right. The park is 100m down the road. If not, turn right and cross the bridge, passing Ferrycarrig Castle which was built in 1169.
There is a round tower on the side of the bridge you came from. Ride past the castle, up the hill and take the first left, signposted Newcastle [5km marker]. Follow it for 4.5km. It goes south, then turns sharply and heads northwest.
When you reach a t-junction, take a left.
10 – 20km
The road will go downhill to the Slaney. After crossing the river, go under the train tracks and take an immediate right. Soon you will take another right back under the tracks. This cul-de-sac runs along the bank of the river.
Return back the way you came and cross the river again. Follow the same road uphill. Stay on it [15m marker] as you go through a crossroads and then cross the N11. Be careful of the fast-moving traffic here as you cross. Follow the sign for Castlebridge. Stay on this road.
20 – 30km
When you reach a t-junction at Castlebridge, turn left. After 1.5km, take the first right. Ignore a left turn on the way and [25km marker] soon you will reach the t-junction with the R742.
Take a left, signed for Curracloe. Follow this for 4.5km. Ignore the sign in the town for Curracloe beach – you will return that way. The road narrows on the other side of the town. Take the next right, 2km after the town, signed Ballinesker.
30 – 44km
This road runs behind the dunes of the beach. You pass one car park, and later keep straight through a far larger one when the road turns right. Turn right at the next t-junction.
You reach another t-junction. Take a left and follow the sign for Curracloe. When you reach the village take a left on the R742. Follow [35km marker] this for 5km to a t-junction with the R741, where you turn left.
Soon, after passing a garage there is a left turn which is signed for Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. It is 2km down this road if you want to visit it. Otherwise it is 2.5km to Wexford Harbour Bridge. Cross it, turn right and you reach the train station.
